Dialysis Access and AV Fistuloplasty

A dialysis fistula or graft can narrow over time, which makes dialysis slower and less effective. Fistuloplasty opens the narrowed segment so the fistula keeps working.

Treated by Dr. Jyotish Roy, vascular and interventional radiologist in Kolkata.

Signs your fistula needs attention

  • Difficulty placing needles
  • Longer bleeding after dialysis
  • A weaker thrill or pulse in the fistula
  • Swelling of the arm
  • Your dialysis unit reports poor flow

How it works

Through a pinhole, a small balloon is passed into the narrowed part of the fistula and inflated to widen it. Narrowing in the large central veins is treated the same way (central venoplasty). A blocked fistula can sometimes be reopened by removing the clot.

Recovery

It is usually a day-care procedure, and the fistula can often be used for dialysis soon afterwards.
