How it works
Under X-ray guidance, a thin tube is passed through a pinhole in the groin or wrist to the arteries that supply the fibroids. Tiny particles block that blood supply, and the fibroids shrink over the following months.
Benefits
- No abdominal surgery
- Most patients go home the next day
- The uterus is preserved
After the procedure
Some pelvic pain is expected for a few days and is managed with medicines. Follow-up scans check how the fibroids are shrinking.
Risks
Like any procedure, embolization carries some risks, including infection, bleeding and possible effects on future fertility. These are discussed fully before you decide.
