Who it is for
TIPS is considered for repeated bleeding from swollen veins in the food pipe or stomach, or for fluid in the abdomen that keeps returning despite medicines. The decision is made together with your liver specialist.
How it works
Through a vein in the neck, a channel is created inside the liver and held open with a stent, so that blood can bypass the high-pressure area.
Recovery and risks
TIPS is done in hospital and needs a short stay. Risks include confusion caused by toxins reaching the brain (hepatic encephalopathy), bleeding and narrowing of the shunt, so regular follow-up scans are needed.
