Peripheral Artery Disease and Leg Angioplasty

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a narrowing or blockage of the arteries that carry blood to the legs. It is more common in people who have diabetes, smoke, or have high blood pressure or cholesterol.

Treated by Dr. Jyotish Roy, vascular and interventional radiologist in Kolkata.

Symptoms

  • Cramping pain in the calf, thigh or hip while walking that eases with rest
  • Cold or numb feet
  • Wounds on the feet or toes that heal slowly
  • Pain in the foot at rest in advanced disease

Diagnosis

A Doppler ultrasound or CT angiogram shows where the arteries are narrowed.

Treatment

  • Angioplasty

A balloon opens the narrowed artery through a pinhole.

  • Stenting

Where needed, a small mesh tube keeps the artery open.

  • Lifestyle and medicines

Medicines, walking exercise and control of diabetes, blood pressure and smoking remain essential.

Recovery

Most patients stay in hospital for a day or two and return to normal activity soon after.
