Diabetic Foot and Non-Healing Wounds

In diabetes, nerve damage and poor blood flow can turn a small foot injury into a wound that does not heal. Without enough blood, tissue can die (gangrene). Restoring blood flow early gives a wound its best chance to heal.

Treated by Dr. Jyotish Roy, vascular and interventional radiologist in Kolkata.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Numbness or reduced feeling
  • Tingling or burning
  • A change in skin colour or temperature
  • Swelling
  • A wound with or without discharge
  • Blackening of a toe

How Dr. Roy helps

  • Blood flow assessment

A Doppler scan and, where needed, an angiogram show whether the arteries to the foot are narrowed or blocked.

  • Angioplasty and stenting

A narrowed artery is opened with a balloon, and sometimes a stent, through a pinhole, to bring blood back to the foot.

  • Working with your team

Wound care, infection control and diabetes management continue alongside, with your surgeon and physician.

Prevention

Check your feet every day, keep them clean and dry, wear well-fitting footwear, and see a doctor promptly about any wound, however small.
