Symptoms
- Bulging veins
- Aching or heavy legs
- Swelling around the ankles
- Itching or darkened skin
- Ulcers near the ankle
Diagnosis
A duplex (Doppler) ultrasound maps the veins and shows where blood is flowing the wrong way. The treatment plan is based on this scan.
Treatment options
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)
Laser energy heats and seals the faulty vein through a pinhole.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Radiofrequency energy closes the vein in a similar way.
Glue treatment (VenaSeal)
A medical adhesive closes the vein without heat.
Sclerotherapy
An injection that closes smaller varicose veins and spider veins.
Recovery
Most patients walk soon after the procedure and go home the same day. Compression stockings are usually advised for a period afterwards, and light walking is encouraged.
