Who it is for
Ablation is considered for nodules confirmed as benign on needle tests (FNAC) that are causing symptoms or a visible swelling.
How it works
Under ultrasound guidance and local anaesthesia, a thin needle is placed into the nodule. Radiofrequency or microwave energy heats the nodule, which then shrinks gradually over months.
Benefits
- No neck incision or scar
- The rest of the thyroid gland is left in place
- Usually a day-care procedure
Risks
Possible risks include temporary voice change, pain and swelling. These are discussed before the procedure.
