DVT Treatment and Thrombectomy

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in a deep vein, most often in the leg. It needs prompt treatment because part of the clot can travel to the lungs.

Treated by Dr. Jyotish Roy, vascular and interventional radiologist in Kolkata.

Symptoms

  • Swelling of one leg
  • Pain or tenderness in the calf or thigh
  • Warmth and redness

Sudden breathlessness or chest pain can mean a clot has reached the lungs. Go to the nearest emergency department immediately.

Diagnosis

A Doppler ultrasound confirms the clot and shows how far it extends.

Treatment

  • Blood-thinning medicines

The main treatment for most people.

  • Catheter-directed thrombolysis

In selected patients with a large clot, medicine is delivered directly into the clot through a thin tube.

  • Mechanical thrombectomy

A device removes the clot through a pinhole.

  • Venous stenting

Used where a narrowed vein caused the clot.

  • IVC filter

For selected patients who cannot take blood thinners.

Recovery

Hospital stay is usually short. Blood thinners and compression stockings are normally continued afterwards.
